Mostek was a computer chip manufacturer, founded in 1969 by ex-employees of Texas Instruments. Mostek manufactured logic, memory, and microprocessor ICs. Mostek invented DRAM multiplexing, created the CMOS process, and made many other significant contributions during the early years of the Semiconductor industry.
Mostek was acquired by United Technologies in 1980. The company became quite unprofitable during the industry downturn in the early 80s, and was sold to Thomson Semiconductor in 1985. Thomson laid off most of the workforce in an attempt to return to profitability and subsequently merged,
in 1986, Thomson merged with SGS-ATES to form STMicroelectronics. By this time, most original Mostek products were obsolete. STMicroelectronics was created in 1987 by the merger of SGS Microelettronica of Italy and Thomson Semiconducteurs of France with the aim of becoming a world leader in the sub-micron era.
Today, STMicroelectronics is a global semiconductor company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) and discrete devices used in a wide variety of microelectronic applications, including telecommunications systems, computer systems, consumer products, automotive products and industrial automation and control systems.
